Summertime in New York City means hot, sticky days and hordes of tourists clogging up the streets. But if you know where to look, there are still plenty of secrets to be found in this concrete jungle. The Brooklyn Bridge offers some of the best views of Manhattan. Normally, when you see someone walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, they're surrounded by the iconic structure. But today, there's just a model walking around nearly nude. Thanks to Trina Merry, the bridge has turned into her canvas, and the model has become one with it.
Merry is a world-renowned bodypainting artist who creates incredible illusions that make her models disappear into their surroundings. For her latest project, she painted influencer Taylor LaVie to look like she was disappearing into the Brooklyn Bridge. The finished product is stunning and incredibly realistic.
Merry says her art is about "challenging the viewer's perception of reality”. She's inspired by architecture and nature and loves to create illusions that make people do a double take.
The piece was commissioned by LaVie after she saw Merry’s “Urban Camouflage” series.
“As a newer resident of New York it was really special to be camouflage painted into such an iconic place like the Brooklyn bridge. Trina’s extremely talented and being able to be a part of her work seemed like a really unique and fun opportunity to share with my audience.,” said LaVie.
They arrived at sunrise to create the painting, which took around an hour and a half.
“It was a lot harder than it looks standing in one position at 5 o’clock In the morning,” said LaVie.
“I love arriving to a location before most people wake up and seeing their reactions as they’re having their morning commute,” said Merry.
The public was shocked by the early morning performance.
“The reactions were the funniest part, people were very caught off guard and didn’t really know how to react or even if it was okay to look especially in the beginning. As the process began to come together it was really cool to see the reactions from people walking by,” said LaVie.
Merry says her goal is to "create beauty in the unexpected”. Her art is bold and full of life - just like New York City itself!
